General Dentistry TMJ Disorder (TMD) Symptoms

Keith G. Lorio, DDS in Baton Rouge, LA, can determine if your symptoms indicate a TMJ disorder and strive to provide relief.

Understanding TMD

Normally, the TMJ system is in a state of balance allowing the muscles to function properly when needed, and then have low activity while at rest. The jaw has a normal range of motion, so you can speak, eat, yawn, and move your jaw comfortably. Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, is a condition in which the teeth, jaw joints, and muscles of the face and jaw are not in a state of physiologic rest or balance. This can lead to painful symptoms, compromised movement, and more.

The Dangers of Not Treating Your TMJ Concerns

TMJ disorders are uncomfortable as is, but when left untreated, the symptoms can become worse and cause more damage to your muscles, joints, teeth, and quality of life. You may eventually experience adhesions and degeneration of the joint without intervention. Dr. Keith Lorio is a trained professional who has completed many types of training to diagnose and treat jaw dysfunction.

You don't have to figure out how to find relief on your own. During a consultation with Dr. Lorio at our Baton Rouge dental office, you can expect:

  • Discussion and preview of our diagnostic methods using advanced technology and traditional methods
  • To share your symptom history
  • Immediate feedback on your symptoms

I can’t thank Dr. Lorio enough for how he has changed my quality of life. I went in with really bad tmj pain after being told by a doctor that it wasn’t anything serious and to continue taking Tylenol for the pain. I was taking two Tylenol every 4 hours it seemed! Thankfully once I started my appointments and received my mouth orthotic I felt immediate relief! Dr. Lorio is very knowledgeable and his attention to detail is commendable.

Diagnosing and Treating TMJ Disorder Using Advanced Technology

Our Baton Rouge office uses advanced technology to determine if the relationship of the upper and lower jaw, TMJs, and muscles are in physiologic balance or an optimum state. We can see if you have hyperactive or underactive muscle activity.

Once muscle activity is measured, our goal is to help the muscles which may contribute to your head, neck, and jaw pain. We can then try to establish the optimum jaw relationship to aid in finding relief for you.
